What this pathway is
National registration or filing is the formal route for an imported product seeking the applicable NMPA status and a basis for activities within the resulting permitted scope. The correct route depends on whether the product is a drug or medical device, its category and classification, its intended use, and the current technical and administrative requirements.
For imported medical devices, Class I products follow filing, while Class II and Class III products require registration. The overseas applicant designates a domestic agent, and the applicable submission materials are provided in Chinese. Drug applications follow the current drug-registration provisions and the requirements relevant to the product and application type.
Who may find it relevant
Teams planning broader Mainland China commercialization should examine the national pathway early, even when a regional special-access question is also under review. Classification, evidence, quality, documentation, responsible-party, and lifecycle responsibilities can affect the sequence and scope of work.
What it does not provide
A general overview cannot determine classification, the complete evidence package, acceptance of overseas data, review timing, approval, reimbursement, procurement, or commercial results. Regional clinical use does not replace the formal national route.
Questions to assess
- Is the product regulated as a drug or medical device, and under which category and classification?
- Which registration or filing route and application type apply under current rules?
- What Chinese-language, quality, clinical, testing, and administrative materials are required?
- Which domestic agent, applicant, or other responsible-party arrangements apply?
- How might overseas evidence be used, and what gaps require product-specific confirmation?
- Which commercialization and market-access steps remain after registration or filing?
